How to Keep the Peace on Vacation: Expert Tips for Couples

Updated: Nov 1, 2024

Its that time of the year and we are all looking forward to a well-deserved break.  However, as much as its a time for relaxation and rejuvenation, holidays can cause strain on relationships and can cause a fair amount of stress.  Below are a few tips to help you and your partner to prevent and or avoid arguments and fights during your vacation. This will keep the peace on the vacation and between couples.

  1. Accept you will fight - this does not mean that we have to be on hyper-alert for fights but we also do not have to walk on egg shells. Conflict is an unavoidable occurrence, what matters is that relationships remain in-tact, everyone feels heard and a win-win situation is created.

  2. Anticipate stress - try identifying ways to help you cope with stressful situations whilst on vacation. Try breathing exercises, meditation or exercise.

  3. Prepare a no discussion list- you are on vacation, so have fun!

  4. Look at fights that you had in the past and what the triggers were- this will help you to address issues before your vacation and help you  to avoid situations that may cause fights.

  5. Take time out for yourself.

  6. Accept your partner for who they are and how they travel.- Be patient with each other

  7. Compromise!

  8. Talk things through don’t assume.

  9. Make time for each other- Emotionally check in.

  10. Remember why you are on vacation in the first place.

Safe travels and remember be kind to yourself and others.

Yours in wellness
